Two different cases: the USA and Latin America
There is no free trade agreement between the EU and the United States. US goods generally pay the duty set in TARIC for their commodity code – always check it at the time of import, as trade measures between the two sides can change.
Much of Latin America is different: the EU has trade agreements with Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Central America, among others. If the goods qualify as originating under the agreement and the exporter declares this correctly, the duty can be reduced or removed. Without that proof, the standard rate applies.
What changes on arrival in the Canaries
The Canaries apply the common EU tariff but have their own tax system: instead of VAT you pay IGIC (standard rate 7%), on a base that includes the customs value, the duty and onward costs to the first place of delivery in the Canaries. Invoices in dollars are converted at the customs exchange rate in force.
Certain goods – beer, some spirits, building materials or furniture, for example – also pay AIEM. Food, plants and products of animal origin go through sanitary or phytosanitary border checks as well.
How we handle it
- Enquiry: tell us the product, country of origin, value and delivery terms on WhatsApp or by phone.
- Origin and documents: we check whether a preference applies, which origin statement the exporter must make and whether certificates or checks are needed.
- Transport: we coordinate sea or air freight to Tenerife, depending on urgency and volume.
- Clearance and taxes: we clear the goods in Tenerife and settle duty, IGIC and any AIEM.
- Delivery: after release, the goods are delivered to you on the island.
What we need from you
- Commercial invoice (in dollars or euros) with a clear description, value and Incoterm.
- Packing list and transport document (bill of lading or air waybill).
- The exporter’s statement on origin, if an EU agreement applies.
- Health or phytosanitary certificates for food, plants or animal products.
- Your company’s NIF and EORI number.
