Why the Canary Islands are different
On an island there is no road alternative: everything arrives by sea or air, and an out-of-gauge piece depends on the ships, cranes and space available in port. The ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Granadilla are the gateways; Granadilla, for instance, has already handled large wind-turbine components.
Then there is customs. Even cargo from mainland Spain needs a customs declaration and IGIC (standard rate 7%), plus AIEM if any component is listed in its annex. From outside the EU, duty is added. For projects arriving in several shipments, decide from the start how each part will be classified and declared.
What needs planning
- Real dimensions and weights of each package, with centre of gravity and lifting points
- Equipment: flat-rack, open-top, ro-ro trailer or breakbulk, depending on size and origin
- Port and discharge: crane capacity, storage space and coordination with the ship's agent and stevedores
- Abnormal loads by road: if the unit exceeds general mass or dimension limits, it needs a supplementary permit from the Spanish traffic authority (DGT), usually applied for by the specialist haulier
- Insurance in line with the value and risk

Questions about special cargo
How far ahead should we plan?
As early as possible. Suitable ships, cranes and permits are not always available at short notice. With dimensions and dates we can tell you what lead time is realistic for your case.
Can a project be cleared in several shipments?
Yes, but each shipment needs its own declaration. Setting up the paperwork for the whole project at the start avoids inconsistencies in classification and value between shipments.
Do you also handle the abnormal-load transport on the island?
We coordinate it with our partners: a licensed specialist carries it out, and we make sure it fits in with port discharge and clearance.
